Firefighters said maintenance workers jumped into action Monday afternoon when a fire started at a Lexington apartment complex.

It started around 2:30 at Old Farm Apartments on Appian Way off of Tates Creek.

Firefighters said maintenance workers heard smoke alarms going off in a downstairs apartment.

The person who lived there was not home at the time.

Investigators said the workers started using fire extinguishers to try to put out the fire until firefighters arrived.

According to the Fire Department, one person was evacuated from an upstairs apartment unit and two dogs were rescued.

Firefighters did not yet know the cause of the fire but said it likely started between the kitchen and living room.
