Thomas Kelly, the longtime archbishop of the Louisville archdiocese, is dead at the age of 80.

The archdiocese says he died at a Louisville parish Wednesday. No cause was given.

Kelly was archbishop from 1981 to 2007, then became archbishop emeritus. He dealt with the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, though most of the allegations were from a period before he was archbishop. The archdiocese eventually paid $25.7 million to 240 reported victims.
