In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, volunteers quickly came together to lend a hand, including in Kentucky.

The American Red Cross has upwards of 15,000 people in the 170 shelters in place.

The Bluegrass Chapter of the Red Cross deployed 8 volunteers to the areas hardest hit, like West Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.

Ron Shipman, a volunteer with the Red Cross, said the 2-feet of snow on the ground has made getting supplies and travel very difficult.

The Red Cross in New York worked together with the Kentucky Baptist Convention to provide food and shelter to the many displaced victims.

The Red Cross is providing the food for the 50,000 meals the Baptist Convention will cook.

There are many ways to donate to the Red Cross...Just visit their website at RedCross.org.

The Director of Development with the Bluegrass Red Cross, Winn Stephens, said disasters like this are a good reminder of the need to have a stable blood supply and to visit the Kentucky Blood Center to donate.
