A fire in Crab Orchard took the life of a 61-year-old man and his dog.  The victim's son had to helplessly watch his dad's trailer burn.

Teddy Day was a Grandfather and a Veteran.  The Day's celebrated Teddy's 61st Birthday earlier this week.  In the middle of the night he died when his home went up in flames.

"My father was a great man, loved everybody, do anything he could for you.  He's just always been a great Papa to all of us, and a dad, and just a wonderful man," said Shawn Day, Teddy's son.

Shawn lives next door to his Dad, and he had to witness the trailer burning.

"I heard sirens, the dogs are barking, looked out, looked up here at my dad's trailer, and it was on fire, came running up here, and it was just totally engulfed in flames," said Shawn Day.

Investigators believe the fire is accidental.  They are not yet sure what started the fire.  Lincoln County's Fire Chief, Danny Glass, says the trailer had two working smoke detectors, and Day almost made it out.

"It looks like,  yeah, he made the effort, and just about 4 feet from the door is where we found him," said Glass.

Day's dog Pepper also died in the fire.  Shawn says Christmas will never be the same.

"We miss Dad, and we love him so much.  He will be missed,"  said Day.
