Lincoln County High School Football played without one of their coaches tonight.
The county coroner said Assistant Coach Mickey Goodwin, 47, died in a motorcycle accident Friday afternoon.
The Sheriff’s Office said Goodwin’s motorcycle hit a vehicle on Highway 27 this morning. Goodwin then hit a guardrail and was thrown from his motorcycle.
The County Coroner said Goodwin died later at UK Hospital.
Lincoln County decided to still play their game in Boyle County tonight in his memory.
Parents, players and fans we talked to said this is hitting everybody hard.
“It’s tough. Yeah, it's really tough. But they came here to play for him. And I think that's what he would have wanted,” parent Marvin Robinson said.
Head Coach Mike Settles said the team first heard about Goodwin’s death just two hours before the game.
“We had a locker room full of players just weeping and crying,” Settles said. “So we had to make a decision continue to move forward tonight and play the game. And we call this family... and they felt like it was important to do.”
Settles said Goodwin’s death didn’t really hit him until after the game.
“Kids didn't have a problem going to him for advice,” Marvin Robinson said. “He basically led them in the right direction... and kept them on the straight and narrow.”
