What is considered the official temperature in Lexington is taken by the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) at Blue Grass Airport.

The system also provides other weather data such as the wind speed, wind direction, humidity, rainfall total, and visibility distance.

The ASOS is placed close to the airport's main runway, providing pilots with the information they need to safely arrive and depart.

The instruments are calibrated for accuracy by the National Weather Service throughout the year with the thermometer being tested at least every 3 months.

The thermometer must fall within plus or minus one degree of a highly accurate mercury thermometer.

Although the airport reports certain weather conditions, other locations in Fayette County may differ due to differences in terrain and elevation.

National Weather Service officials estimate the platinum wire thermometer cost between $4,000 and $5,000 with the entire ASOS costing more than $50,000.
