Lexington Zumba Fundraiser For Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has been operating above capacity this winter and the price of this harsh season is catching up with them.

To help cover the costs, one of the Salvation Army volunteers, Karen Mielcarek, led a Zumba workout to raise money for the non-profit organization.

Hundreds of people attended and they raised $2,600.

I had no idea about this turnout. I walked in and I saw people standing in line outside and I just wanted to cry,” Mielcarek said.

The Salvation Army said they have seen a 60 percent increase in the number of people who has stayed at the shelter this year.

“This is my tenth winter here and I have never seen it so cold or have I seen it so full at this time of year,” said Major Debra Ashcraft.

Ashcraft said their shelter takes in women and children.

“I think tonight is certainly going to help a lot. This event we know won't meet all of our financial needs,” Ashcraft said about the winter’s financial burden.
