Teenagers in Central Kentucky are working to break stereotypes about their generation and end violence in their schools and communities.

The youth of First African Baptist Church went to a "Kentucky Teen Institute" workshop which inspired them to start making changes.

They made a PSA and went to the Lexington Fayette Urban County Council to get a proclamation which led Mayor Jim Gray to declare today "Speak Peace To Violence" day.

Today, council members, Lexington Police officers, the fire chief, and congressman Andy Barr were all at an event which included a march and memorial for those who have lost their lives to violence.

The group's leaders say this is a year-long project.

In phase two they will partner with other groups in the community to help spread the word.
