Virginia Avenue was closed overnight after Lexington police received reports of a woman standing outside her apartment complex holding a gun.

Police said the woman, who suffers from a mental illness, thought she saw a raccoon outside her apartment so she came outside with a BB gun to look for it.

Police said neighbors were alarmed when they saw her holding a gun, so they called authorities.

Officials said they couldn’t make contact with the woman when they arrived on the scene. Virginia Avenue was closed down and police took safety precautions while approaching the apartment.

As it turned out, the woman said she had simply gone back to bed, never knowing that police were outside.

Police said once the woman answered her door, they checked to make sure she was alright.

No charges were filed.

Police said they did confiscate the woman’s BB gun and ammo.
