Lexington Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty To Harassment

Lexington Police Officer Keith Spears pleads not guilty in Scott County to harassing a 13-year-old soccer referee. 

The attorney for Keith Spears would not into specifics, but he says what happened on a Georgetown soccer field is very different than what Spears is accused of.

"The officer disputes the allegations," said Fred Peters, Spears' Attorney.

Peters came to court for Spears.  Peters said Spears was working, and hopes to keep working. 

Spears is accused of verbally confronting, shoving, and grabbing the arm of a 13-year-old soccer referee. 

Spears has been a police officer for more than a decade. 

His lawyer indicated the cop acted in self-defense against the 13-year-old.

"You can defend yourself out in the world.  I'm not talking about in court," said Peters.

Lexington police suspended Spears in 2005 for incompetence. 

Police suspended him in part for an off-duty verbal confrontation. 

The police complaint says during the confrontation at a gym, Spears was carrying a weapon in plain sight. 

"He's obviously very concerned, and very embarrassed that his family and him have been subject to all this public scrutiny," said Peters. 

The defense will have to present more of its case at the next court hearing in mid-December.
