The Lexington National Cemetary became a final resting place for fallen soldiers during the Civil War.

When the war ended, The Lexington Cemetery donated the lot where the Union dead were buried to the federal government which, along with the lot beside it, became The Lexington National Cemetery which now includes a section specifically for veterans.
