Nerlens Noel is out of for the rest of the season after an ACL tear.

As the news makes sports headlines across the country, ABC 36 wanted to know more about the injury.

Lexington Orthopedic Surgeon Trevor Wilkes showed us a model of the human knee.

He pointed to a narrow, vertical ligament that appears to be a peach color.

That is the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament.

"There's four major ligaments in your knee. The two ligaments in the middle make a cross. We call them the cruciate ligaments, from the latin word for cross. The one that comes forward here is called the anterior cruciate ligament. And this is the one that is so commonly injured in athletes," says Wilkes.

Doctor Wilkes says about 200,000 Americans tear their ACL's every year.
