A Lexington family is raising money to buy a dog for their special needs son.
Adam Lucas’s mom, Shonda Lucas, said her son was born with a virus that severely damaged his brain.
She said Adam is easily overwhelmed and has impulse control issues – like running away or running out in front of cars in parking lots.
“A trip to the grocery store can be horrendous,” Shonda said. “Either because we'll have a meltdown, he'll get crazy and run away. The parking lot is an issue… just to get in and out of the store.”
The family hopes to get Adam a service dog to help stop him from running away. They said he can be harnessed to the dog, who they also plan to have trained in search and rescue.
“They help with anxiety and when the child gets overwhelmed and overstimulated, they kinda come in. they know when to come in. they know their child and what their child needs,” Shonda said.
The family said a service dog cost thousands of dollars. They’re hoping to raise $13,000 to help pay for the dog.
