Layoffs At Saint Joseph And Saint Joseph East Hospitals

An estimated 40 employees are being laid off at Saint Joseph and Saint Joseph East Hospitals in Lexington, according to a spokeswoman from KentuckyOne Health.

"Every health care organization today is being challenged to adapt to an ever-changing business environment," said Barbara Mackovic of KentuckyOne Health in a prepared statement sent to ABC 36 News.

"Health care systems must continually adjust their business models to ensure they continue to meet their missions.  Like most other systems, KentuckyOne Health continually monitors our patient volumes and adjusts staffing to meet those needs.  When we have growth in certain areas, we increase our staffing needs.   Unfortunately, when we see a decrease in patient demand, we must also adjust our staff accordingly.  This is a responsible business practice.  Our primary focus is to ensure that we provide a safe, quality environment for our patients while being responsible stewards of our organization," Mackovic said.

It is unclear when the layoffs will begin.

Last November, Saint Joseph Hospitals laid off 36 employees in Lexington.  Most of the affected workers were at Saint Joseph Hospital on South Broadway.

Firing nurses is never the answer. Inarguably, the expendable ingredient in the doctor-patient relationship is the hospital administrator. St. Josephs is spiraling downwards because of poor leadership. Period. They should have laid off 40 adminstrators or administrator assistants, as these are the people who truly deserve to lose their jobs.

I am amazed at St Joseph and Ky One. They keep making adjustments because they don't have the "money". How about we quit buying hospitals and hiring upper management and see what will happen to our costs then. It also overwhelms me that when they lay off employees they give them no warning at all. When I turned in a notice I had to give them 4 weeks or I wouldn't be eligible for rehire. It's getting bad, and probably only going to get worse. We didn't even have enough ICU beds last week...now we need to lay people off. Quit wasting our money KY one!

mgraban - Sorry to burst your bubble but Toyota did lay off their employee's. It just does not show because most employee's of Toyota are temp's hired by a service and not "Employee's" of Toyota. Full time employee's had their hours cut from 40+ per week to just over 30. As for "Must", it is a cost / return function. Basic math is that, for any company to just break even, the revenue must equal the employee pay doubled. When insurance cut the reimbursment amount to hospitals, and wages go up, either the doctor treats more patients or they "must" cut costs. Unlike governments where to make ends meet they just up the taxes, business have to sell their services and deal with the costs.

It's not true that you "must" layoff staff when patient volumes drop. Look in your own state at Toyota - they don't layoff full time employees even when car sales drop. There are also more hospitals that are using the Toyota management system (aka "lean") to partner with their employees in improvement and cost savings instead of resorting to layoffs. so whats the word? Fewer people getting sick? Who are they gonna let go? Doctors? Nurses? Maintenance? This is just a sign of the things yet to come.....OBAMA HEALTH CARE! Wake up people! Vote for a candidate who won't cut out much needed hospital staff! This is crazy!
