A Kentucky mother has been charged with murder in New York for allegedly poisoning her young son.
Prosecutors in New York have accused 26-year-old Lacey Spears of slowly poisoning her child. They believe she did it for attention.
Spears, who is from Scottsville, Kentucky pleaded not guilty to murder in a New York courtroom Tuesday.
Police said they believe she poisoned her five-year-old son Garnett with salt while they lived at a New York retirement community where she worked.
When the boy died doctors found suspiciously high levels of sodium in his body. His death in January was ruled non-accidental.
Police said they’ve been suspicious of Spears from the start.
Spears frequently posted her son's illnesses on social media, leading police to believe this is a case of Munchausen by proxy.
Munchausen is a disorder in which a parent deliberately harms their child to gain sympathy and attention for themselves.
Investigators said building the case against Spears was a slow process.
“It took us across five different states, hundreds of interviews, examination of thousands of documents and a significant manpower commitment by a number of different agencies,” said George Longworth, Westchester Co. Police Commisioner.
Investigators said from her social media posts on Garnett's illnesses, Spears had likely been abusing her son for years.
