Courts across Kentucky will be closed on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 for a furlough day.

This is the first time since the modern court system was enacted in 1976 that it has closed to make up for budget cuts.

Other offices in courthouses will be open Tuesday, including sheriffs departments and county magistrates.

After Tuesday, the next scheduled furlough is October 15, 2012.

Court officials are scheduled to meet in January to figure out whether more furlough days will be necessary for the final six months of the current fiscal year.
