Kentucky American Water says the freezing temperatures earlier in the week caused a main water pipe to burst.
They say that pipe was fixed, but that it caused a domino effect creating other leaks in pipes throughout the county.
Kentucky American does not know when all the leaks will be repaired yet.
In the meantime, people in the county have been going to pumping stations to get a couple of gallons of fresh water per day.
Many businesses in town, specifically barber shops and restaurants have had to close their doors because of the water issues.
Those that did stay open had to haul thousands of gallons of water into their business every other day.
Health officials want to remind people of some safety tips when using water from the pumping stations:
-Make sure your water is coming from a safe source.
-The tank that hauls it in is for drinking water only, not been used in farming practices, etc.
-Make sure you place the water in a container that has not held chemicals, pesticides etc.
-Use food grade containers or coolers to transport water home.
-To ensure safety the water can be boiled for 3 minutes.
A pumping station has been setup at the Owen County Fairgrounds. Here is a list of other pumping stations that have been setup in the county:
-Monterey Fire House
-Jonesville Fire House
-Hesler Assembly of God Church
-Owen County Electric Office.
Kentucky American is also asking people in the county to help look for leaking pipes. They say if you see large puddles of water along the road to call them at: (859) 269-2386.
