For many people in the Bluegrass, spring doesn't start until Keeneland opens its gates.

Although thunderstorms and heavy rain expected throughout Friday, a spokesperson confirmed that the horses will still run.

As fans head to the track over the next month, they'll see something for the last time, but there's something new to be excited about.

The current track is a man-made mix of sand, fiber, and rubber. It has made Keeneland one of the safest places to race in the country, but this summer executives said it will be ripped up and replaced with dirt.

According to Keeneland spokeswoman Amy Gregory, the change will attract a wider range of horses.

"Horsemen prefer to run on the dirt track,” Gregory said. “So if we switch we'll get even more triple crown and rare horses here."

Construction of the new track is scheduled to begin next month.
