The market continued to show considerable strength on Wednesday when gross receipts of $40,299,000 for the first three sessions of Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale surpassed total sales of $37,991,900 recorded for last year's four-day auction.

Results once again surged on Wednesday when 227 horses brought $4,953,900, an increase of 16.40 percent over 2012 when 263 horses sold for $4,255,900.  Average price of $21,823 rose 34.86 percent over last year’s session average of $16,182. The median price of $13,000 was up 73.33 percent from the $7,500 posted in 2012.

Through day three of the five-day sale, Keeneland has sold 676 horses for $40,299,000, up 17.25 percent compared to $34,371,200 for 750 horses at this point in 2012. The average of $59,614 increased 30.08 percent from last year’s $45,828, while the median of $25,000 rose 25 percent from $20,000 last year.

“It was active throughout the day, as evidenced by the 73 percent increase in the median and 34 percent increase in average,” said Walt Robertson, Keeneland Vice President of Sales. “We sold a lot of good short yearlings, highlighted by the Medaglia d’Oro colt that topped the session.”

That yearling colt by Medaglia d’Oro sold for $350,000 to Ben Glass, agent for Gary and Mary West. Consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, the colt is out of Cicada Stakes (G3) winner Bohemian Lady, a half-sister to millionaire Grade 1 winner and sire Any Given Saturday.

Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings paid the day’s second-highest price of $190,000 for stakes winner Cosmo Girl, a six-year-old mare by City Zip out of Ever Imelda, by Personal Hope. Cosmo Girl is a half-sister to stakes winner Green Suede Shoes. She was consigned by Baccari Bloodstock, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.

The January Sale continues through Friday, January 11. Sessions begin daily at 10 a.m. EST. The entire sale is streamed live at Keeneland.com
