Kentucky State Police said they are facing some of their largest shortages of manpower in more than 30 years.

Ninety recruits from across the Commonwealth reported to their first day of KSP Academy in Frankfort on Sunday. Troopers said these men and women will be the next generation of KSP.

The training is an intense 23-week program designed to challenge the cadets’ body, mind and spirit.

Throughout their training, cadets will have to complete more than 1,000 hours of classroom and field study.

Capt. David Jude said the drop out rate is high for KSP Academy. Jude said in the past about 20 percent of the cadets won’t graduate.

This class is scheduled to graduate on November 19.
