Two Knox County teenagers were hurt and another was fatally wounded after they were hit by an ambulance as they rode their bikes along US-25E, according to State Police.

Investigators said the ambulance was transporting a patient from Barbourville to a Corbin medical center shortly before 10pm Saturday when it left the roadway and crossed into the median, hitting the teens.

We're told one of them, 14-year-old Samson Callender, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Mountain Advocate newspaper, two other teenagers, Keysawn Blevins and Trenton Brock, received minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

EMS in Barbourville reported that the ambulance driver, who they said is very grief-stricken over the accident, is not under suspension and will not be in trouble.

Officials said residents in the community will be gathering to talk with local responders and fire crews to help them cope with the situation.
