A 105 Howitzer Artillery Piece is now on display at the Boyle County Fairgrounds. Danville veterans said their 441st unit trained on this weapon in the 1950’s.

“We had three of these weapons in our unit and our primary function was field artillery,” veteran Walter Arnold said.

Today, Arnold still remembers how to operate the Howitzer.

“I feel honored to have it back here because it's kind of a memorial to what we used to do,” Arnold said.

VFW Post Commander Jack Hendricks said when they found out they were getting an artillery piece, they had no idea it would be identical to the weapon the 441st unit used.

“Most people didn't know that our armory had history with the 105,” Hendricks said.

They said the Howitzer has been used in the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq Wars.
