The Hope Center in Lexington is seeing a higher demand for its services than it did last year. The center is serving 38,000 meals each month, a number they describe as a significant increase over last year. The center also provides mental health services, drug programs, job search assistance, shelter, and clothing.
The cause for homelessness is not just the economy. Hope Center Program Director David Shadd said, "Substance abuse and mental health are two of our bigger reasons people are becoming homeless."
The Hope Center has improved or saved countless lives in Kentucky. One of its many successes is Brad McDaniels, who was homeless for 4 years.
McDaniels is a college graduate, had a successful 16 year career, and family. He says alcohol was the reason for his divorce and career loss. He then received help from the Hope Center and now works there as a peer mentor.
