Hands-On Lesson On Distracted Driving For Some Lexington Workers

We've all heard about the dangers of texting while driving. But nothing beats experiencing it for yourself.
We've all heard about the dangers of texting while driving.

But nothing beats experiencing it for yourself.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety paid a visit today to the people at Columbia Gas in Lexington.

Workers got to try a distracted driving simulator.

They simulated driving a car while texting or using a cellphone.

As you might guess, some accidents resulted.

The people who run the simulator say this always generates good word of mouth.

Jack Hutchinson of the KY Office of Highway Safety says, "They'll share it with their coworkers. And before you know it, they're all talking about, 'You know, I used to text and drive, but man, I ran into a pedestrian on there...I rear-ended a car or truck or whatever.' And they'll say, 'It's maybe more dangerous than I realized.'"

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the chances for a crash are 23 times worse if a driver is texting compared to when the driver is focused on the road.
