A member of the ABC 36 News family has received a very prestigious award and some well-deserved recognition.

Good Morning Kentucky's Lauren Gawthrop has been named the American Cancer Society's 2013 Volunteer of the Year in Kentucky.

Gawthrop was praised for her work as an emcee, a fundraiser, a 'Relay For Life' Team Captain and for driving patients to their treatments.

She was one of 113 nominees.

Cherlynn Stevenson of the Lexington Leadership Council said picking Gawthrop was an easy choice.

"She's just a very, very special person. She touches everyone. She has such a bubbly personality. And her love of life and the care that she shows to the patients that the ACS serves is just bar none," said Stevenson.

Gawthrop co-anchors Good Morning Kentucky on ABC 36.
