Mamadou Savane, the owner of Sav's West African Grill and Cuisine, said thank you to the more 1,000 people who came to a fundraiser Monday night.

It was the first time many had seen him since since he was hospitalized for days after a cooking accident badly burned half his body.

"He came home four days ago, sigh of relief. nice to be home," said Rachel Savane, Sav's wife.

The community's raised around $60,000 for his medical bills and to keep the doors open at the only West African restaurant in Lexington.

"The food is good but I think people come here for my dad," said Bangaly Savane, Sav's son.  "He's an exceptional person, kind to everyone, remembers a face forever."

Savane said her husband always walked around asking patrons how their food was.

"People are like, wow you're the owner and you're asking us if we like it.  Then they get happy.  That's what he does by nature, not by plan," said Savane.

Sav's has been open 5.5 years.  in that time there have been a lot of people served... a lot of customers, happy that he cares.  on this night it was the customers who served him and his family to show how much they care.
