A former special education teacher at Leestown Middle School in Lexington has been sentenced in connection to sex abuse charges.

Jason Thompson worked in the Fayette County Schools for five years and was also known across the nation as a Zumba instructor.

According to court documents, Thompson was accused of the abuse from incidents involving a 13-year-old boy in 2009.

When the allegations became public in July 2012, Superintendent Tom Shelton said the abuse did not occur on school grounds.

In late 2012, he resigned from his teaching job when school officials confronted him about those charges. Thompson’s Zumba license was also revoked when police filed the criminal charges.

Thompson plead guilty to six counts of second-degree sexual abuse in February 2014. According to court documents, each count carries a 12-month sentence.

In court on Wednesday, Thompson was given a chance to speak before getting his sentence from the judge.
“I first just want to apologize to the individuals, the kids, that were involved,” he said. “I’m just in a place where I am ready to rectify the wrong.”

Thompson was sentenced to serve all six 12-month sentences concurrently. He is also required to join the sex offender registry for 20 years.

ABC 36 News crews tried to talk to Thompson and his attorney after the sentencing; they had no comments on the matter.

Thompson is will begin his sentence on Wednesday.
