Former Lexington Police Chief John McFadden died Thursday in Hospice Care in Lexington at the age of 78.
He was born June 24, 1934.
He was a graduate of St. Paul's Elementary, Lexington Catholic High School, and received his BS and M.P.A. degrees from Eastern Kentucky University.
He began his career with the Lexington Police Department in April 1957 and progressed through the ranks until his appointment as Chief in 1980. He served as Chief until 1990.
A number of the Department's current divisions and policies began during Chief McFadden's tenure.
He helped establish the Lexington Police Academy.
While Chief, the mounted patrol unit was established.
Chief McFadden received several awards, including the National Defense Ribbon, Kentucky Medal of Merit, Kentucky Distinguished Services award and the Kentucky Meritorious Award with Three Clusters.
Besides his distinguished 33-years in law enforcement, Chief McFadden had 25-years of service with the Kentucky Army National Guard. He retired from the Guard in 1978.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Visitation will be at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Road from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with a Fraternal Order of Police service at 7:00 p.m.
Another visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 501 West Short Street, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. McFadden will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
