Parking in downtown Lexington became a lot easier Monday morning.

The former Annex garage--now known as the Helix garage--officially opened Monday.

The garage is on East Main, next to the Lexington police headquarters.

While there were no structural problems with the garage, the support steel on it was rusting and chunks of concrete were falling.

It was closed last November in order to undergo a $3.1 million renovation.

Among the changes: computerized gates and payment terminals.

Also, parking on nights and weekends will no longer be free, and the police department and county clerk's office will no longer be able to validate parking.

Parking in the garage during the week will be $1 per half hour.
