Flemingsburg City Council Tables Pitbull Ban Ordinance

Flemingsburg City Council tabled an ordinance Monday night that would ban pitbulls. Council members voted yes on the first reading of the ordinance, but say they need to do more research on pitbulls before they pass the second reading and make the ban official.

personally I think this ban is absurd. you say that these bigger dogs are killers, dangerous to be around people, etc. I believe the behavior of any dog is determined on how the owner raises them. a dog is a responsibility, you have to teach that dog the difference between yes and no, to not jump on people, to go to the bathroom outside. a dog cannot learn without the help of their master or a dog trainer. when a family gets a dog that dog becomes part of their family, how can you be apart of making this ban happen and take a family member away from them? how can you lump all big dogs into a vicious category? little dogs in my neighbor bark all hours of the night and keep my daughter up, there is a beagle who lives outside down the street everytime I walk past his house that beagle runs after me and my two year old and barks viciously. I've known severely Chihuahuas to bit my ankles when I walk into a friends house. are you going to ban all little dogs too? because from my experience little dogs have given my life hell more than bigger dogs. we have people of all races in jail/prision does that mean everyone in the world will end up in jail/prision? how can you lump the dogs who have made negative headlines and say the whole breed is a danger to society? ive owned three pitbulls before and they were always loving to strangers and family and littleones. one time my 100lb male and 65lb female dug a whole under the fence and took a walk around the neighbor by themselves..several neighbors calles the cops because they were scared that "pitbulls were roaming" the cop came saw them just walking along and my dogs ended up leading the cop back to my front door. the cop had told me that he was very shocked at how well behaved they were and how smart they were for leading him to our house. he made a comment that his perception about pitbulls changed. I believe it is extremely unfair to categorize every big dog into a vicious, dangerous category.

Vicious Dog Laws CAN pertain to a "Potentially Dangerous Dog" if showing any sign of aggression as small as chasing someone down the street or an unprovoked attack on another animal of similar species. DISCLAIMER FOR THOSE THAT ARE CANINE IGNORANT: DOGS CHASE CATS! SOMETIMES FATALLY WOUNDING ITS NATURAL ENEMY. DOGS WILL DEFEND THEMSELVES IF PELTED WITH ROCKS, KICKED, BEATEN WITH A STICK, ETC..Surely you have enough intelligence to understand the reality of actual dog ownership of any sort and therefor, are capable of understanding and determining the difference between a natural consequence and "provoked" behavior. Now, Let's allow Flemingsburg to create a Vicious Dog Law that is based on reality, not media hype; that encompasses all vicious behavior, regardless of breed; that is Proactive and provides an extremely reasonable set of laws that other cities can review and copy for themselves because of its innovation and effectiveness! Lead On Flemingsburg!! I want to be proud of those of whom represent our County Seat!

Breed Specific Bans are ineffective as the people whom choose to have a dog that poses a threat to those around it, will do so with another breed. It may take a little while, since the owner will have to either breed another set of parents incorrectly (such as brother & sister, etc) and/or train another puppy to become vicious. I suggest cities to become Proactive in their response to irresponsible and purposely irreputable owners be held to a higher punishment for thier ownership of a "dangerous" and even a "potentially dangerous" animal, regardless of specific breed. Educate yourself about this matter. Reactive legislature usually leaves many characteristics to be desired as another problem may arise, the solution is harder to obtain. Concentrate your efforts on legislature and/or ordinances that pertain to any vicious animal of any breed or species. Focus the effort on creating and maintaining "responsible dog owners" and weed out the "irresponsible dog owners" with stiffer penalties, stricter laws, and the possibility of jail time instead of a small slap on the hand with a minimal citation fee. Even hauling that one dog away just makes room for another because the "irresponsible dog owner" will only replace that one with another. You have not solved the problem.

There are a few breeds that have a bad reputation for being "killers". The majority of these breeds are great dogs that wouldn't hurt a fly. The incompetent owners of the few dogs that have attacked should be punished. The majority of us pet owners that have these so called dangerous dogs are responsible and take the time and effort to properly raise our dogs. Dogs must be shown love and be taught right from wrong just the same as a child. These dogs are members of our families and our best friends. There are too many people getting too wrapped up in the few horror stories that surrounds these dogs and don't consider how many thousands of these dogs that are out in the world loving and caring for people. These dogs only care about pleasing us and being loved. Punish the idiots who turn these wonderful living creatures into attack dogs and leave the rest of us alone because our dogs have never hurt anyone and never will. I feel sorry for the people who have gotten hurt by anyone's pet but the majority of these dogs are very loving.

This is absolutely horrible. I am a dog trainer and behaviorist. I have 7 pit bulls, a 3 & 7 yr old nephew, and 4 yr old son. This is NOT A BREED PROBLEM. Please people look at the bigger picture... CAN A BABY LEARN TO BE POTTY TRAINED ON ITS OWN.....NOoooooo. So can a pitbull teach itself bad behavior....NOOOOOOO. I think what needs to happen is "ANYONE" owning a Pitbull, German Shepard, Rottweiler, Mastiff ect, should have to complete a 6 WEEK TRAINING and socialization class. As well as a CANINE GOOD CITIZEN completion. This will help and ENSURE that theses dogs are being treated properly. ALSO the REGISTERIES such as the AKC, UKC, CKC, ABPBR, ADBA need to "STEP UP" and ONLY allow 2 litters a year for each female dog, "OR" not allow a dog to be breed and registered "UNLESS" the dog has completed a BEHAVIOR CLASS. If the dog is over a yr old it should have to go to a refresher course ONCE each year. I hop this helps. PLEASE CONSIDER SOME OF THIS ADVICE. These are great dogs. Also look at how they were ranked in the united stated temperment test the past year. They did very well.!!!!!
