As people rang in the new year at parties, out on the town or with loved ones at home, the Burgins started 2012 in a maternity ward.
"We went out to eat and we came home and my water broke and I was in denial we didn't bring in the bags when we went to the hospital we left them in the car," said Heather Burgin.
Over 9 months pregnant, Burgin says the trip from their home in Richmond to Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington was filled with excitement and anxiety.
"The due date was (December) 26 so he was a little over and we were going to be induced on the 5th so I wasn't expecting it," said Burgin.
Maybe not expecting to spend her New Years Eve in a delivery room but the new mother says that having her son, Leif Burgin, be the first baby born in Lexington this year is wonderful.
