The Lexington Fire Department just graduated the first class from its Company Officer Academy.

It's the first time, in anyone's memory, Lexington had a formal academy for firefighters being promoted to Lieutenant.

The course included hands-on training with radios, laptops, and computers as well as work on leadership.

The goal is a better-trained fire department.

Captain Jason Wells says, "It's important to Lexington because for a long time we have just put folks out on the line as supervisor without really any formal training. And so now we're investing in our future leaders and trying to give them the training they deserve that's going to help them down the road.

The Department says fifteen new Lieutenants graduated from the program.
