Nothing like some “cold” cash to warm up a chilly day!

Kentucky Treasurer Todd Hollenbach is visiting Magoffin, Lawrence, Lincoln, Mercer, Washington, Martin, Larue, Wolf, Johnson and Morgan counties over the next two months to hold “Treasure Finder” events in each community.

It’s all part of a winter blitz to find the rightful owners of more than $3.1 million in unclaimed property.

“The Treasure Finders program partners with local volunteers in each county.  We roll-up our sleeves and work hard to locate potential claimants.  Our goal is to return every dollar possible,” Hollenbach said.

The Treasury works with local volunteers to establish a phone bank, review property listings and call residents to inform them of potential unclaimed property.

Claimants will then be instructed on how to proceed to claim their property from the Treasury.

Treasurer Hollenbach serves as custodian of all unclaimed property surrendered to the state that is presumed lost or abandoned.   “Most of the properties are in the form of cash,” Hollenbach said, “from old insurance policies to stocks and bonds to leftover bank accounts.

There are also more than 20-thousand unclaimed items stored in the Treasury vault including a Joe DiMaggio autographed baseball, some silver bullion, jewelry and gold coins.  It’s our duty to help return these items to the rightful owners.”

Each year, the Kentucky Treasury returns millions of dollars in unclaimed property to Kentucky residents.

Since 2008, under the proactive leadership of Treasurer Hollenbach and his Treasure Finder’s Program, the Treasury has returned a record $ 72-million in unclaimed property.

Searching for unclaimed property is as simple as the click of a mouse.  All you need to do is visit www.kytreasury.com and click on the “Unclaimed Property Search” and then enter your name in the search box.

And now you can search nationwide by clicking on the “Missing Money” icon on the “Unclaimed Property Search” page.  That will provide you with access to a national unclaimed property database.
