Final Transmissions Of Slain Marion County Deputy Released

The last radio calls between Anthony Rakes, a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff's Department killed in the line of duty, and dispatchers were released Tuesday.
The final radio transmissions between Deputy Anthony Rakes and dispatchers were released to ABC-36 Tuesday.

Deputy Rakes was killed on November 14th after being shot twice in the chest.

The transmissions are chilling--hearing the final transmitted words of a dead man to his comrades.

It began at 1:57 a.m., when Rakes called in a car stopped in the middle of a road.

"I'll be right past the high school, next to short line on 68. Subject is sitting in middle of roadway."

Seconds later, the deputy called dispatch again.

Rakes: "There have been shots fired! I've been shot! Shots fired!"
Dispatch: "Copy 1203?"
Deputy 1203: "10-4"
Rakes: "(unintelligible) Get an ambulance!"

1203 was the code of another deputy working that night. He made his way to Rakes while the dispatcher called for help.

Dispatcher: "Officer has been shot."

Deputy 1203 made it to Rakes by 2 a.m., and immediately called it in: "Let me get an ambulance now!"

Rakes had been shot twice in the chest, and the suspect had already left the scene.  The dispatcher asked after the suspected shooter:

Dispatcher: "Is that vehicle still there?"
Deputy 1203: "Negative. I don't know nothing, he's just laying here in front of his car!"

At 2:05 a.m., the ambulance called in, asking for a helicopter: "Have the helicopter meet us at Springview. We've got two gunshot wounds to the chest."

However, Rakes was never picked up by that helicopter--police said he died at Springview Hospital during surgery.

The man accused of killing Rakes--DeWayne Shipp--was found later that day in Campbellsville with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.

State troopers said Shipp was released from the hospital Monday and taken to the state reformatory in La Grange.

He's charged with murder.
