New research shows the number of flights out of Blue Grass Airport have dropped dramatically over the past few years, and that means fewer options for travelers.

It's a trend we've seen at smaller airports across the country.

With the recession, several airlines have merged, cutting the number of flights they offer to stay afloat.

A study out of MIT shows a 19-percent drop in departures since 2007 at Blue Grass Airport.

But the number of seats for sale has only dropped 4 percent.

More efficient planes have also helped to reduce the drop in the airport's capacity.

While some larger carriers are cutting flights, low-fare airlines such as Allegiant have added more flights and destinations out of Blue Grass Airport.
