Fayette County Public Schools Child Nutrition Coordinator says they feed students significantly more local food now than just a few years ago.

People from the United States Department of Agriculture visited Cardinal valley Elementary to see how kids benefit from the Farm to School program.

Last year kids studied the benefits of buying local food, and showed off their knowledge.

"It's good for the environment, because there's no pollution," said 5th grader Kevin Olmeda.

The students impressed officials from the U.S.D.A.

"Oh my goodness, this is great," exclaimed Janey Thornton, U.S.D.A Deputy Under Secretary.

Many of Cardinal Valley's students rely on the school for a nutritious meal.  97% of the kids are eligible for free, or reduced lunch.

"If you can't concentrate, you can't still, it's very hard to get into what you're doing if you haven't had a decent meal," said Marty Flynn, FCPS Child Nutrition Coordinator.

Flynn says the Fayette County Schools feed kids more local food than ever before.  Some of which comes from Cardinal Valley.

The school started growing its own vegetable garden with lettuce, spinach, egg plant, and many more vegetables.

"We're going to get a compost bucket, and when we finish lunch we're going to put our left-overs in it, and then we're going to give it to Ms. Boyle, and she's going to put in the plants to help them grow," said Olmeda.

The U.S.D.A reps were supposed to observe how Cardinal Valley serves breakfast under new federal guidelines.

They came late, and missed breakfast.

"We are trying to get out to as many schools around the country as we can just to show our support from the federal level," said Thornton.

She apologized for the late arrival, and says the more kids learn about vegetables the more they eat healthily.
