There have been more than a hundred theft related crimes in 2013 in Lexington according to police.

While a car was being broken into in the Chilesburg neighborhood area on Saturday, February 23, a man who live there took an unexpected role of neighborhood crime fighter.

Tony Spoto, 37, said he was headed to the gym for a workout that morning around 7 a.m. He said when he went outside to get in his car, he saw someone in his neighbor’s car.

“He was between the houses,” Spoto said, “And I just yelled what are you doing? He said nothing and then just bolted.”

Spoto said the man jumped over a fence in the backyard and Spoto chased him. He said it was an automatic response to someone being on his property and he wanted to protect his wife and 4 children.

But Spoto said the chase went on around the neighborhood for 35 minutes.

“He's not really giving up,” Spoto said halfway through the chase. “And you're like man is this really worth it? And then you go no, we get emails all the time about people breaking into our cars. I'm not letting this guy go. He's going to jail today.”

Spoto said he pulled out his cell phone at one point and called police. And more than two miles later, officers caught up with them.

“They caught up to us on the same street and he put his hands up,” Spoto said.

Police arrested Sergei Sargaev who they said had other outstanding warrents as well.

Neighbors bought Spoto a cake that said, “Tonyman the Neighborhood Hero.”

“You should hear the guys I work out with at the gym tell the story,” Spoto said. “I told them, and now when they tell it, I'm like batman. I mean it's awesome.”

Lexington Police remind others not to take the law into their own hands. They said it’s potentially dangerous to chase the bad guys and can be left to them.
