Authorities tell ABC 36 an underground transmission line failed in downtown Lexington early Wednesday morning.
It caused a small explosion that knocked out power to more than 1,000 people.
Kentucky Utlities officials say a power surge went thought a high-voltage line at the intersection of Rose and Vine Streets around 1 a.m., making several buildings in the area go dark. The resulting explosion blew a manhole cover off.
KU crews isolated the problem and restored power, but officials say they will need to repair the damaged section of power line and that may cause some minor disruptions in the area later.
