Dry Season Creating Better Wines

The dry hot summer is producing grapes with more sugar and fewer chances of disease.
      The hot dry summer has been hard on crops like corn and soybeans, but not for local vineyards.

      Some local vineyards and wineries like Wildside Winery in Versailles says they're expecting some of their best red wines in recent years.

        That's because their grapes are have more sugar content this year, a byproduct of the grapes being more dehydrated due to less than average rain.

       The more sugar in the grapes means the sweeter the wine and more alcohol content.

       Less moisture in the grapes also means less chance of the vines getting disease which is normally common in vineyards in central Kentucky.

       Less moisture also means fewer grapes per vine, and can even destroy younger vines.
