Lexington Police are searching for a man who smashed his car into a business and then took off running leaving behind an injured puppy.
According to officers, the car was driving near downtown when it almost crashed into a squad car just after 9:00 Sunday night.
The officer started to pursue the man, who they say was driving recklessly When the officer caught up with the car, he tried to pull it over, but says the driver refused to stop.
Police say, out of concern for safety, the officer backed off and radioed to other officers in the area to be on the lookout.
Then, just a few minutes later, officers got a call for a car that had crashed into the Photo Therapy store at Versailles Road and Trafton Street.
When officers got there, they realized it was the same car they were originally trying to find and started looking for the driver.
They say the driver had already taken off, but left open alcohol containers and an injured puppy inside the car.
"The humane society has come and taken that puppy that had some injuries,” Lexington Police Lt. Eddie Hart said. “According to the humane society, the driver of that vehicle could be facing felony charges for this animal being injured and being left in the vehicle.”
The humane society took the puppy to a local veterinary hospital.
