Dietician: Watch The Calories In Your Favorite Fall Foods

Beware the label--a Lexington dietician said favorite fall foods could have more calories than consumers think.
Favorite fall foods can be misleading--just ask Registered Dietician Sheri Legg.

"If it's an apple or it's some pumpkin, that's one thing...but if it's apple pie or pumpkin pie or a pumpkin latte, then that word that follows up the word 'apple' or 'pumpkin' is where the calories lie. So be very careful when you're choosing those types of things," said Legg.

Nutrition facts for the following via USDA:
-Pumpkin pie, 1 slice: 323 calories, 13g fat
-Apple cider doughnut (sugared, cake doughnut): 426 calories, 22g fat

Nutrition info via packaging:
-Caramel apple with nuts: 260 calories, 8g fat
-8oz glass apple cider: 130 calories, 30g sugar

From the Starbucks nutrition website:
-Pumpkin spice latte, tall: 210 calories, 8g fat, 25g sugar
-Pumpkin bread: 390 calories, 14g fat, 38g sugar
-Hot chocolate, grande: 370 calories, 16g fat, 43g sugar

Legg suggested portioning foods and drinks like the ones listed above, so that consumers could include them in their diets without overdoing it.

"It's just having those foods in small portions and not forgetting about the other foods we're eating during the rest of the year," she said.
