The police department began its bicycle patrols, which were out in full force for the American Brass Band Festival Saturday.

Officers said they like bicycles because it allows them to do their job while also being a part of the community.

"So many times we're seen as police officers, and we get in as being a bad guy 'cause we're the person that has to arrest people. But this gives us the chance to be the good guy and have positive interactions with people," said Officer Chase Broach

Broach said being more approachable also helped while searching for an armed robber last summer.

"No one would've approached us in a car, but they were able just to pass by us and tell us a tip as they walked by," he said.

The Danville police department has nine bike-certified officers, seven of which patrol regularly.
