"We've seen a large increase in the past several months of counterfeit money coming into restaurants, banks, and stores," said Sgt. Jody Stowers, who works in the Lexington Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit.
Stowers works counterfeit cases weekly. If you think you may have been passed fake money, he recommends calling the police.
"A lot of patrol officers can identify counterfeit," said Sgt. Stowers.
Some counterfeit bills are easy to identify, but Sgt. Stowers recommends you always check the change you get back.
"You can compare it to other bills you have, look at the ink, it shouldn't be smeared. Make sure there is printing on both sides. We've received money in the past that's ridiculous," said Sgt. Stowers.
Stowers always recommends businesses train their employees to look for counterfeit money, and he says the police can help with the training.
