Council To Vote On Ending Lexington Brownouts

Brownouts could be coming to an end in Lexington.

The Urban County Council will vote on a proposal tomorrow that the Fire Department said would keep them fully staffed and could bring an end to the brownouts.

Brownouts are when fire stations close for a day at a time to save money. This means longer response times and can threaten public safety.

The proposal would approve paying more than one million dollars in overtime for firefighters.

It would also add two additional recruit classes to the department that would start training this summer. The Lexington Fire Department said with new firefighters, they will be fully staffed and won’t have to shut down.

The council's Budget and Finance Committee unanimously approved the proposal at a meeting yesterday afternoon.

Council will vote during their Urban County Council Meeting tomorrow at 6 p.m.
