Constables Still Needed in Crab Orchard

Constables Still Needed in Crab Orchard

The local constable is the only law enforcement entity in the town.
Lincoln County Constable Jesse Harris is the only law in Crab Orchard.

A native of Crab Orchard, Harris has served as a Lincoln County Constable for 16 years, but became only law enforcement in town back in 2009 when the community had to dissolve the police department due to a lack of funding.

Harris works everything to auto accidents to shop lifting, working more than 40 hours a week and making more than 30 calls in a week.

Harris also works virtually for free. He supplies his own car and pays about 100 dollars for gas out of his own pocket.

Crab Orchard Mayor Billy Shelton says Harris has been a Godsend to the community who would have to wait about 15 minutes before a Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy could respond to a call in the town.

Shelton says now that the city's finances are growing again, he plans to hire a couple of part-time police officers to help Harris, in the next year or two.
