Backers of a plan to bring the University of Pikeville into the state system are now offering a compromise idea.
The plan, from Speaker Greg Stumbo, Representative Leslie Combs, and Pikeville President Paul Patton, would allow high school graduates from a 16-county area -- who have earned 60 college credit hours -- to be eligible for a grant at a public or private college. This would be funded by coal severance taxes and private donations.
All three say this plan achieves the goal of giving a college education to more people in the region.
