The Kentucky Department of Education wants Clark County to follow through on its school renovation plan.

The plan, first approved in 2007, called for a new high school, the merging of two middle schools and closing of some elementary schools.

But many parents are upset with the plan and want the school to delay construction.

The Department of Education said the state has already spent $21 million and the county needs to hold up its end.

The state denies “telling” Clark County how to run its schools.

“We're not in the business of educating kids directly all we're asking for is that the building is a high quality building which can provide a good environment for those kids,” Hiren Desai, the Assistant Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education said.

Clark County School Board members said they are not happy with what they are calling a “threat,” but believe they will have to comply.
