Cold Weather Blamed For Water Main Break

Cold weather is blamed for a downtown Lexington water main break Thursday.

Cold weather is blamed for a downtown Lexington water main break Thursday.

Water began pouring onto Main Street, in front of the Heritage Hall at the Lexington Center, around 10 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Officers were forced to quickly shut down a few lanes of traffic. They said, because the air temperature was so cold, the water was turning into ice.

Kentucky-American Water crews were called to the scene to make repairs. By Friday morning, workers had shut down the water line and then began the process of replacing the broken pipe.

Repair crews were forced to rip up Main Street to access the broken pipe.

Lexington Police officers believed this is a major pipe, but they weren’t sure how many people were without water.

Main Street has since reopened, according to officials.
