A string of burglaries in Downtown Lexington is bringing the community together.

Several local businesses have been hit by burglars but A Cup of Commonwealth, a downtown coffee shop that was also targeted, decided to turn these burglaries into something positive.

Shop owners started offering a free cup of coffee to anyone who shopped at a downtown business that had been broken into.  It’s grown into a pay it forward chain and owners placed The Community Christmas Tree in the window.

“Anyone in need or anyone who just wants a gift can come and grab it,” said Salvador Sanchez, one of the shop’s co-owners.

“So I just went out and bought a bike and knew that I could bring it here and it would go to someone,” said Lauren Coldiron when she dropped off a bike after seeing on the coffee shop’s Instagram page that a little kid picked up another bike someone else had left.

Owners say being burglarized is the best thing that’s ever happened.

“It's made me love Lexington and just completely fall in love with the city,” said Sanchez.

“It is surprising because that's not how most people would respond,” said Becky Lorenzo, a customer.

Shop owners say they aren’t crime fighters or superheroes.  They just want to show this city some love.

“That's just kind of what we're doing and things are having this really fun ripple effect that we get to watch and be a part of,” said Sanchez. “It really reminded us how contagious being good is and how contagious community is and treating people right and we just kind of watched it take off.”

Sanchez says there are more people dropping off gifts than taking them.  If there are still gifts left after the holidays, he says they will either have a Christmas party with their customers or deliver the gifts to people as a surprise.
