The hottest toys or latest gadgets top many Christmas list this time of year.
An 8-year-old in Lexington is showing the true spirit of Christmas and asking others to give to those in need.
Instead of asking for Christmas presents, Delaynie Chatting is collecting shoes for kids who don’t have any. She’s up to 96 pairs and plans to donate them to the Kebron Orphanage in Ethiopia.
“I just wanted to help other kids who don't have shoes, nice shoes and good shoes like me and my family,” said Delaynie.
“We were a little taken aback when she asked could she not get Christmas gifts and said that she wanted shoes didn't really understand where the shoe thing was going or coming from until she explained,” said Holly Chatting, Delaynie’s mom.
Delaynie says she just wants to help people. Her mom thinks she may have gotten the idea after watching a video at church. They connected to the orphanage in Ethiopia through a family friend.
Delaynie is collecting boys and girl’s closed-toe or sandals in sizes that fit ages five to 15 through the end of winter break. The shoes will be delivered in January.
